Inner City Outings

Washington, D.C. Inner City Outings (D.C. ICO) is a community outreach program that works with local social service agencies to provide low-income, inner-city youth with wilderness experiences. Participants learn interpersonal skills, self-esteem, teamwork, and an appreciation for nature as a result of their active relationship with the great outdoors. The D.C. ICO program works to instill positive outlooks, environmental awareness, appreciation for wilderness, physical fitness, and leadership skills in young people who often would not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy or experience the outdoors. In the almost 30 years since D.C. ICO began, the all-volunteer program has conducted thousands of educational, enjoyable, and safe outings for youth in D.C. D.C. ICO partners with three community-service organizations to organize monthly outdoor learning experiences, and serves approximately 75 youth per month on three to four outings. ICO currently partners with and serves the following communities and service agencies:

  • Beacon House—serving the Edgewood Terrace neighborhood and surrounding Ward Five communities in Northeast D.C.
  • Highland Addition—serving the Highland Addition housing development in Anacostia.
  • Wheeler Creek—serving the Wheeler Creek housing development in Anacostia.

Work to Ride

Work to Ride

Work to Ride (WTR) provides youngsters with a positive outlet for their energy and an alternative to negative "street" activities. Participants develop discipline, responsibility, and life skills through training, riding, and performing horse care and barn management chores. They also develop confidence, self-esteem, and the skills necessary to complete successfully in their chosen activities. The youth are allowed to choose among various horse sports. While most are trained and talented in several sports, polo has proven to be the perennial favorite of WTR youth. In addition to acquisition of life-skills, WTR also emphasizes the necessity of academic achievement. Staff and volunteers provide after school tutoring to help students maintain the passing grades required for program participation.
